I’ve been neglectful of this blog over the past month or so for a few reasons
- Moving to Victoria
- Work
- Time
- Other projects
The ‘other projects’ is the main reason. I’ve mentioned a few times that I will be going travelling in 2010 (this year) and now it is confirmed. 12th April 2010 @ 12.05am (00:05) I will board a plane to Beijing to start what I’m hoping to be a very long, very adventurous SOLO trip around the world. I will be taking GK Photography on a world tour – but not in this blog.
Because of the expanded nature of the posts, and my want to cover topics such as Marketing and Business I have purchased a new domain – www.GlennKelly.com.au.
This will become a one stop shop for everything Glenn Kelly’ish and host 2 new blogs:
- Marketing for SME – www.GlennKelly.com.au/marketing/
- World Tour – www.GlennKelly.com.au/worldtour/
The marketing blog is self explanatory, it’s about marketing for SMEs, and how to be cost effective, efficient and think like the big boys. The World Tour blog will be my travel journal, as well as a place, I hope, that I can help other Solo travelogues with tips and tricks I have found. I have travelled solo for years, going all over Australia to work, all I’m doing is translating this to a global scale.
The World Tour blog will include podcasts, images and articles about my trip, people I meet, places I visit and hopefully do it in a fun and engaging way. So this is not hte end of GK Photography simply a new begining in a different form. trust me my camera and kit will be travelling the world with me and getting many many pictures.
So this is Goodbye for now – Thankyou for reading and I hope to see you at the world tour blog.

“…Birthday Dear Sav…”

A little friend of mine celebrated her 1st birthday over the weekend. Kids are just a joy to photography, they have the most wonderful expressions that even the greatest models in the world can’t replicate. The picture above was little Sav’s reaction to someone calling out while she opened her presents, no-one was taking the attention away from her!
The other wonderful thing is that kids just don’t care the is a camera in their face. While adults shy away or ‘act up’ when ever they see a big black camera in my hand, kids couldn’t care less.
I hope that in 20 years some of these images of her first birthday survive, and knowing her mum they will.

“How to take this photo…
…Lets use this chair”
1st – PROPS
It is surprisingly easy to take this photo. Ignore the lighting or the camera used, a lot can be achieved with simple items such as, in this case, a chair.
It serves two purposes:
1) Gives the subject something to interact with, which lessens the isolation and strangeness of staring down a lens.
2) Gives the subject a familiar way to pose, everyone knows how to sit.
The boys, from left to right, Walter, Yaro and Gideon wanted some images that where both professional yet slightly laid back, unfortunately you don’t get that feel from a studio shoot normally so a living room seemed a much better option. As mentioned before I always feel there is one way to guarantee a laid-back feel, introduce a prop they’re all familiar with..
‘..enter the chair.’

Gideon. In the background you can see the strobe used on the backing wall to remove shadows.
We all love sitting, we all spend a lot of time on our backsides looking at a screen these days so sitting comes as naturally to us as, well sitting.
The image at the top of this post shows that utilising the same prop and even pose can give three different results. The three photos, shot from nearly the same location, are some of my favourite from the couple of hours worth of images filling my hard-drive, because they show the boys in a completely relax state even though they’re in a quite unfamiliar situation.

“..6am Roar..”

Brisbane Roar Team Shoot for White Ribbon Day

Massimo Murdocca, Michael Zullo & Henrique pose with the White Ribbon Day Pledge Jar
On a warm, sunny Brisbane morning I grabbed my camera bag and headed to Balimore stadium to shoot the Brisbane Roar. While I was still rubbing sleep from my eyes, the full team was in kit and out on the field ready for training. I will state from the outset the guys where great, I’m bad when I comes to getting my photo taken at 6pm let alone at the wee hours of the morning like these guys.
While the individual shots where quite easy, the group shot was harder than expected. There where, as you can see above, 24 guys, and even with a 17mm wide angle lens it was hard to get them all in shot, in the formate needed for the posters. There was also a time constraint and wrangling 24 guys takes up a little bit of it.
The reason behind the shoot? The Brisbane Roar are supporting White Ribbon Day (25th Nov). The entire team is also taking the pledge.
‘I pledge not to commit, excuse or be silent about violence against women’
It’s been a rough couple of months for the Brisbane Roar, and A-league in general, with a downturn in crowd attendance, and then the week they announce lower ticket prices a issues with the coach. But when you compare that to the issues the NRL faces these boys are saints.
All in all it was a great shoot, and hopefully you’ll see the White Ribbon Day posters around town with the team on them. If not there are few events, check the White Ribbon Day Website here.

“…Always a Grooms-man, never a Groom…”

The Bridesmaids outside of the church after the ceremony
Another week, another beautiful wedding. Louie and Katee, tied the knot at a church in Brisbane in front of 150 guests before having the reception at the RiverRoom, over looking the Brisbane CBD.
Once again I was a grooms-man, meaning I was limited in the chances I had to grab a few frames. Luckily for me the one I did manage to get I was happy with. The church was wonderful, with brilliant light and shade, the Limo was entertaining with the Champaign flowing and plenty of laughter and the reception was a blast.
Louie and the other grooms-men looked handsome, Katee was radiant, and along with her beautiful bridesmaids we had a great amount of fun during the professional photo shoot with Sterling Studios. Check out their work it is absolutely brilliant!
Because I was trying to travel lite, I only took the 40D with a 50mm prime lens which ended up being perfect to capture the behind the scenes while sitting at the bridal table. Capturing Katee crying, Louie laughing and Cameron inspecting the food, while myself enjoying the festivities, was wonderful.
Katee exiting the church and greeting the many many guests.

The Bride, Katee, greets here guests after the ceremony.
